Mary Fenton

Class of 2005

Where do you currently live?

What is your current job/year in school?

I am a first grade teacher at St. Mary’s and loving it! It’s awesome to be back in a school I’ve attended from Pre-K to 8th grade.

What was your educational path after graduating from St. Mary School?

After graduating from SMS I attended Foran High School. I was a snare drummer in the school’s marching band which was the best decision I could’ve ever made for myself. Being active in a club such as that and making instant friends truly relieved some apprehension about transitioning into a public school. I then attended CCSU for a couple of years then finally graduated with my bachelors degree at SCSU. I then went on to obtain my Master’s degree in teaching at Sacred Heart University. I am state certified in K-6.

What volunteer efforts are you involved with?

I am a current and active member of the Fairfield Gaelic Pipe band playing the bagpipes. We are involved in various activities including charity events, local/community events, and parades of course!

How do you feel SMS prepared you academically?

St. Mary’s definitely challenged and encouraged me to succeed. I feel that I came to high school feeling well-prepared for the challenges that awaited me. I couldn’t have asked for more supportive and caring teachers. It’s because of the influence of my SMS Kindergarten teacher who inspired me to become one myself!

Do you feel SMS provided you with a foundation for your future?

Absolutely. SMS not only provided me with an excellent educational foundation, but religious as well. I was able to develop a strong moral foundation due to the school’s connection with the church that has served me well as an adult. Learning how to practice the sacrament of reconciliation, making my communion and confirmation are just a few of the ways St. Mary’s has served me so well religiously and made me the person I am today.

What are some of your favorite memories of SMS?

My friends from SMS were lifelong. The friends I have made in Preschool/Kindergarten are still my best friends to this day and we had so much fun doing anything and everything together. I remember playing in the SMS basketball tournaments, going to the carnival every fall, and partaking in all bake sales and raffles. I was also fortunate enough to have learned Latin in 8th grade from the late Father Cronin.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m getting married in September of 2022 and looking forward to new adventures. Whatever life throws at me I just know that I want to keep teaching and working with children- I would be lost doing anything else!

What advice can you give to our students?

School will be tough. The most sincere piece of advice I can offer is to keep going no matter how discouraged you feel because it will be worth it in the end. Also, most importantly, listen to your parents. It might not be easy, but they are always looking out for your best interest in the end.
