I work as an account executive for a Boston-based technology company, Boston Technologies.
What was your educational path after graduating from St. Mary School?
After SMS I attended Notre Dame High School in West Haven. Despite a challenging course load I was able to make the honor roll each year, taking several AP classes as well. At Notre Dame I discovered a talent for running. By my senior I captained both the Cross Country and Track teams. In addition, I played the drums in the marching band and was a peer counselor. After high school I attended the University of New Hampshire. In 2004 I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a major in Economics and minor in German. During my time in college I spent one semester abroad, in Berlin, Germany.
How do you feel SMS prepared you academically?
SMS provided my first exposure to the various areas of study I would encounter as I entered high school and college. Fortunately, when I entered high school I did not find myself completely overwhelmed due to the education foundation I received at SMS. Because I was both challenged and encouraged to succeed at SMS, I came to high school well prepared for the challenges that awaited me.
What are some of your favorite memories of SMS?
Yes. SMS was more than just a school building. Many friends that I am still close to today I met while at SMS. Due to its connection with the church I was also given a strong moral foundation that has served me well as an adult. In addition, I was fortunate to have learned Latin from the late Father Cronin. This background made it possible for me to excel in high school where I received several awards in the subject. An exposure to a foreign language early on in life also made it easier me to study the German language, which I am nearly fluent in. What are some of your favorite memories of SMS? It’s a difficult question, I think my involvement in the Boy Scouts, raffles, and bake sales come close, although I really enjoyed the basketball tournaments the most.
What are your plans for the future?
In my spare time I enjoy writing and exercising. If I can find the time I would like to write a book one day. I also hope to get back into competitive running, something I’ve done even after high school.
What advice can you give to our students?
It’s normal to be confused or not understand a new subject at first so have patience when you are studying. If you are very confused, you aren’t the only one, there is a strong chance your classmates might be, too. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, it’s the only way to make sure you understand. Try to volunteer for the answer even if you are unsure, you’d be surprised how many times you are correct. Finally, when taking a multiple choice test, try not to change your answers too often, usually your gut feeling is the right one.
