For Students...
Kids Closet
On the First Friday of each month, the SMS community collects children's items for local families in need. Located in the lower level of the rectory, the Kids Closet is run by a volunteer staff and is open every Wednesday (9:30 - 11:30) and Saturday (11-1). We welcome anyone in the community who could benefit from our services to come by during these hours to "shop for free." During these same hours we accept donations of new and gently used clothing (newborn through high school sizes, as well as maternity), outerwear, shoes, toys, books and baby gear such as strollers, car seats and bedding. None of this would happen without our volunteers --including several SMS students, many alumni and high school students, retirees, mothers, fathers -- who work faithfully to help. Donations can be dropped off at the school lobby the first Friday of each month. Contact information: Kathlene Deck-Gerrity (203-876-9924, kmskd@yahoo.com)
Pet Food Collection
As part of our celebration for 100 days of school, Mrs. E's Kindergarten Class donated close to 100 cans of dog and cat food to the local animal shelter. Mrs. E has been doing this for at least 10 years - showing our children, that even as 5 year olds, they can put their Faith in Action. Throughout the years her classes also donated quarters (given to them for good deeds) for The Make a Wish Foundation. This year, however, they began a special collection named "An Angel by Your Side" which will be sent to our friends in Newtown.
Medical Mission to Haiti
Recently, St Mary Parish Twinning Committee sponsored another Medical Mission to our sister parish of Ste'Therese. The team, which included our own Mrs. Joan Calendrillo, visited Haiti on Saturday March 2nd and returned the following Saturday. As in the past they sent surgeons, doctors, nurses and support members to bring medical services to the parishioners of Ste' Therese. One of our major efforts continues to be maternal and child health. Thank you for all the donations you sent in to make the Birthing Bags. These bags were given to expectant mothers and contained essentials to provide for a safer birth.
Thank you for your love and prayers.
Bridgeport Rescue Mission
Donation Drive
Another way we showed our Faith In Action was our 2nd Annual Donation Drive for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission. This year we collected donations of body wash, shaving cream, deodorant and hair care products. These were some of the items on the Mission's current list of critical needs. Last year we blew past our goal of collecting 500 pairs of socks amassing over 1300, and we all came together again this year and had another successful drive for them. These items will be used by those seeking help throughout the Mission in Bridgeport as well as South Norwalk. Thank you to everyone who donated - God bless you!
47th Annual Toys for Tots Collection
Thanks to everyone who donated a toy to our Toys for Tots Collection. We filled up 15 large contractor bags with new toys and collected close to $400 to buy more. Thanks to our Milford Firefighters Local 944 who, for the 47th year, came in their fire truck to pick them up!
Meriden Humane Society
Last year Mrs. Kisiel's Kindergarten class collected coins throughout the year – pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and by the end of the year the class had accumulated $52! They then donated it to the Meriden Humane Society which is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter dedicated to the care & well being of our animals. A great example of how saving a little at a time can make a big difference.
Birthright Toy Tag Sale
Thank you all for your donations of used toys for the Annual Birthright Toy Tag Sale held at St. Aeden's in New Haven! It was a great success!
Halloween Costume Collection
St. Mary School recently collected gently used Halloween costumes for an organization called NeighborWorks New Horizons in New Haven. Our families were very generous this year and there were about 100 costumes in total collected! They were distributed to three separate housing complexes in New Haven.
Costumes will be collected through the end of this week... for next year!
Food Bank
The first Friday of every month, students from Saint Mary School donate food items to the John Rigley Food Bank, located at the church. This Food Bank helps families in need throughout our community. The students have embraced the goal of helping those in need and have made huge contributions to the Food Bank throughout the years.
Make A Difference Day Teddy Bear Collection
THE KINDERGARTEN HELPS TO "MAKE A DIFFERENCE" October 27, 2012, was "Make a Difference Day," America's largest day of service.
This year, our 11th year participating, the Kindergarten was able to donate over 300 teddy bears to the Milford Hospital, the Walk-In Center and the Surgi Center with your support.
